GuideHow to export your Claude conversations
Claude can send you a copy of your chat history and account data, but only from a computer, and the download link doesn't last long. Here's how to request the export, get the file in time, and make sense of what's inside.
Quick answer: on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings → Privacy and click Export data. After a short wait, Claude emails a download link to the address on your account; sign in and download the file within 24 hours. Free, Pro and Max users can do this themselves, Team and Enterprise members need an owner to switch it on, and the iPhone and Android apps can't start an export.
These steps were checked against Anthropic's help pages on 15 October 2026. Menu names may change in later versions of Claude.
Before you start
- Use a computer. Exports can be requested on the web at claude.ai or in the Claude Desktop app. Claude for iOS and Android doesn't offer it.
- Check which account you're in. If the same email has both a personal account and an organization account, switch between them by clicking your initials or name in the lower left corner. The export covers the account you request it from.
- Have the account's inbox to hand. The link is sent to the email address attached to the Claude account.
Request the export
- Sign in at claude.ai or open Claude Desktop.
- Click your initials or name in the lower left corner and choose Settings.
- Open the Privacy section.
- Click Export data. Nothing downloads at this point; Claude builds the export in the background.
Download the file within 24 hours
- Wait for the email. Building the export can take a little while, so the message may not arrive straight away.
- Sign in first. The link only works while you're signed in to the same Claude account that asked for the export.
- Open the link and save the file. It stops working 24 hours after the email arrives.
- Missed the window? Repeat the steps in Settings and Claude sends you a fresh link.
What you receive and how to open it
According to Anthropic, the export contains your chats along with your account's user data. Its Claude for Education page says the conversation data comes as JSON, a plain-text format designed for software, so expect messages wrapped in brackets and labels rather than a tidy transcript.
- Unpack it. If your browser saves a compressed folder, extract it with your computer's built-in tool before opening anything inside.
- Read or search it. Open a JSON file in a text editor or drag it into a web browser, then use Find to jump to a word you remember from the chat.
- Check it right away. Look for a few conversations you care about while the download is fresh, so you can request another export if something seems off.
- Store it privately. The file contains everything you've discussed with Claude. Keep it somewhere you'd keep other personal records.
On Team and Enterprise plans, a member's export covers their own chats but not the contents of files they uploaded, so keep your own copies of important attachments.
Good to know
| Plan or role | Can you export? | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Free, Pro, Max | Yes | Settings → Privacy → Export data |
| Team or Enterprise member | Only after an owner allows it | The same Settings → Privacy steps |
| Team or Enterprise Primary Owner | Yes, for the whole organization | Organization settings → Data and privacy → Export Data |
- Owners turn on member exports in one place. In Organization settings → Data and privacy, the Data management section has a switch called Allow members to export their own data. Members then get their own chats only.
- Primary Owners won't see the personal button. Even with member exports switched on, they use the organization export instead.
- Deleted items stay deleted. For organization exports, Anthropic says messages, files and projects removed before the export starts won't be in it.

If it doesn't work
- No email yet. Give it a little time, then search your spam and promotions folders. Make sure you're checking the inbox tied to that specific Claude account, especially if you have a personal and a work account.
- There's no Export data button. On a Team or Enterprise plan, ask an owner whether Allow members to export their own data is on. If you're the Primary Owner, use Organization settings instead. On a phone, switch to a computer.
- The link says it has expired or won't download. Sign in to the account that requested it and try again. After 24 hours, request a new export.
- You only wanted one chat. The full export is overkill for that. Our guide to sharing an AI chat shows how to send a single Claude conversation as a link.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Claude memory included in the export?
Yes. Anthropic's memory page says all memory data is part of data exports. If you'd like a quick readable copy as well, ask Claude in a chat to write out its memories of you word for word, then save the reply in a document.
Can I load my export into another Claude account?
Not into another personal account: Anthropic doesn't support importing an export or moving data from one personal account to another. If you're joining your employer's Team or Enterprise plan, you can move your personal account into that workspace instead. For students getting a new university account, Anthropic's Claude for Education page suggests a workaround: export from the old account, then upload the conversation data, which is in JSON format, to the new one.
Can I export just one conversation?
Anthropic's export page only describes exporting your whole account's conversations and user data in one go, and doesn't mention picking individual chats. If you only need to pass one conversation to someone, a share link is usually simpler.
