GuideHow to export your ChatGPT history
ChatGPT can send you a copy of your chat history as a ZIP file, but the download link is short-lived and not every plan offers it. Here's how to request the export, download it in time, and find your conversations inside.
Quick answer: on the web, open your profile menu, go to Settings → Data controls, select Export under Export data, and then Confirm export. ChatGPT emails you a download link (or texts it, on phone-only accounts) within up to 7 days, and that link stops working 24 hours after it arrives. Self-service export works on Free, Go, Plus and Pro; Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare users have to go through their workspace owner.
These steps were checked against OpenAI's own help pages in October 2026. Button names may shift a little in later versions of ChatGPT.
Before you start
- Pick the right account. The export covers the account and workspace you're signed in to when you ask for it. A personal workspace and a work workspace are exported separately.
- Make sure you can receive the link. It goes to the email address on the account, or by text message if the account uses only a phone number. You may also be asked to prove the account is yours.
- Stay signed in. The export option in settings isn't available while you're logged out. If you can't get into your account at all, use the Privacy Portal route further down.
Request the export on the web
- Sign in to ChatGPT with the account whose chats you want to keep.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Find the Export data row and select Export.
- On the next screen, select Confirm export. Nothing downloads yet: ChatGPT prepares the file in the background and messages you when it's ready.
Request it from the ChatGPT app
On a phone, open the sidebar and tap your profile icon to reach Settings, then open Data controls. OpenAI's Android instructions say to tap Export data there. Depending on your app version, the app may hand you over to ChatGPT on the web to finish. If you can't find the option in an app, the web steps above get you the same file.
Use the Privacy Portal instead
OpenAI also accepts data requests through its Privacy Portal. It's the route to take when you can't sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open the Privacy Portal and select Make a Privacy Request.
- Choose I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Select Download my data and work through the prompts. You may need to prove you own the account, so keep its email inbox or phone handy.
Download the file within 24 hours
- Watch for the message. When the export is ready, ChatGPT sends an email, or a text if the account has only a phone number. OpenAI says this can take up to 7 days.
- Sign in first. Be logged in to ChatGPT with the account you used to ask for the export before you click anything.
- Select Download data export in the message. The link only works for 24 hours from the moment it reaches you, so don't save it for the weekend.
- Store the ZIP somewhere private. OpenAI warns that exported data can include sensitive account details. Treat the file, and the link itself, like any other personal record.
What's in the export and how to open it
The ZIP holds your chat history together with other account data. Unzip it with your computer's built-in tool and look for a file called conversations.json. Larger exports may spread the conversations across several numbered JSON files instead. For Edu workspaces, OpenAI's page also lists files and other assets used in chats, plus account and conversation metadata.
JSON is plain text written for software rather than people, so every message comes wrapped in brackets and labels. It's still useful:
- Check it straight away. OpenAI recommends opening the ZIP and confirming that the conversations you care about are there.
- Search it. Open the JSON file in a text editor or a web browser and use Find to jump to a word you remember. If you're hunting for one specific chat, ChatGPT's own search is usually quicker; our guide to finding an old ChatGPT conversation walks through it.
- Keep it as a backup. You don't have to read the file for it to be worth having. Leave the ZIP intact and file it with your other records.
Good to know
| Plan or workspace | Export it yourself? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Free, Go, Plus, Pro | Yes | Settings → Data controls, or the Privacy Portal |
| Edu | Only if an admin turns it on | The same Data controls steps; workspaces with any data residency setup aren't eligible |
| Business | No | The workspace owner can export a member's data from the Members page (three-dot menu → Export data) where that option is offered |
| Enterprise, ChatGPT for Healthcare | No | Data access is managed by your organization; talk to the workspace owner |
- Export before you merge. Planning to fold a personal workspace into a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace? Get your export, save the ZIP and look through it before the move. After the personal workspace is gone, an older download link may stop working and a new export may not be possible.
- Edu admins switch it on in workspace settings. Under Workspace settings → Permissions & roles → Workspace, the Data export section has a toggle to let members export their own data. It's off by default and can also be granted through custom roles. Even when it's on, members get their own data only, never a colleague's.
If it doesn't work
- No message after a few days. The wait can be as long as 7 days. Meanwhile, look in your spam and promotions folders, or in your texts if the account is phone-only. If ChatGPT says an export has already been requested, wait for that one rather than starting another. Still nothing after 7 days? Contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center.
- The link has expired or won't open. Sign in to the account that made the request and try again. If more than 24 hours have passed, request a fresh export from settings or the Privacy Portal.
- There's no Export option. Check which account or workspace you're in. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces don't offer it, and in Edu an administrator has to enable it first.
- You can't sign in. Use the Privacy Portal steps above, which OpenAI points to for exactly this case.
Keeping important answers findable with Workbranch
An export is a safety copy, not a place to work through what an AI told you. If you're exporting because useful answers keep getting buried, Workbranch is a separate workspace where AI answers (from Google Gemini) live in projects and color-coded folders, with flags, due dates and ⌘K search. It can't open ChatGPT export files, and it comes with a 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions
Does a ChatGPT export include chats I deleted?
No. OpenAI notes that exporting won't bring back conversations you've already deleted, so they won't come back this way.
Can I load my export into another ChatGPT account?
Only as reference material. You can upload conversations.json, or the numbered JSON files from a large export, to a new chat in a personal account, and ChatGPT can draw on it in that chat. It won't recreate your old chats, restore your sidebar or move settings, memories or subscriptions.
Does one export cover my personal and work ChatGPT accounts?
No. A personal workspace is exported separately. In a ChatGPT Business workspace, members can't export their own data; the workspace owner handles it.
