How to cancel Claude Pro

Where you cancel Claude Pro depends on where you paid for it: on claude.ai, through Apple or through Google Play. This guide walks through each route, what changes when the plan runs out, and when you can ask for a refund.

Updated 15 October 2026

Quick answer: cancel in the same place you subscribed. If you paid on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings → Billing and click Cancel. If you paid inside the iPhone or Android app, Apple or Google handles the billing, so tap your initials, then Billing → Manage subscription, or cancel in the store itself. You keep Pro until the paid period ends, and you should cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date.

These steps were checked against Anthropic's and Google's help pages as of October 2026. Anthropic uses the same instructions for the Max plan. Menus may change in later app versions.

First, work out where you subscribed

Anthropic bills you directly only when you subscribed on the web or in Claude Desktop. If you upgraded inside Claude for iOS or Claude for Android, the subscription and its payments run through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and that's where it has to be stopped. If you can't remember which it was:

Cancel on claude.ai or Claude Desktop

  1. Sign in at claude.ai in a browser, or open the Claude Desktop app on Mac, Windows or Linux.
  2. Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner and choose Settings.
  3. Open Billing. You can also go straight to claude.ai/settings/billing.
  4. Click the Cancel button. Pro stays switched on until the current billing period ends.

Cancel a subscription bought in the iPhone app

  1. Open Claude for iOS and tap your initials in the top-right corner.
  2. Choose Billing.
  3. Tap Manage subscription and follow the prompts to cancel.

Already deleted the app? Cancel through your Apple ID subscription settings instead. Anthropic's own instructions send you to Apple's guide to cancelling a subscription for exactly this case.

Cancel a subscription bought in the Android app

  1. Open Claude for Android and tap your initials in the top-right corner.
  2. Choose Billing, then Manage subscription, and follow the prompts.

Without the app, cancel in Google Play itself:

  1. On your Android device, open your subscriptions in Google Play, signed in to the Google Account that pays for Claude.
  2. Select the Claude subscription.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions on screen.

Google is explicit that uninstalling an app does not end its subscription, so removing Claude from your phone won't stop the charges.

What happens after you cancel

Refunds

Anthropic's starting point is that payments aren't refundable, apart from cases covered by its Consumer Terms of Service or required by law. Who reviews a request depends on how you paid.

If it doesn't work

If you're moving your AI work elsewhere

If Claude isn't the right fit, our comparison of ChatGPT Projects and Claude Projects may help you decide where to go next. Workbranch is another option: a separate workspace where answers come from Google Gemini and live in projects and color-coded folders, with flags, due dates and ⌘K search. It can't open your old Claude chats, and it has a 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

I'm moving to a Claude Team plan. Do I need to cancel Pro first?

Usually not. When you upgrade from Pro or Max to Team, Anthropic ends the individual subscription for you and refunds the unused part of the period automatically, usually about a day after the Team payment clears (purchases made through Google Play skip that wait, though the money can take a few days to show up). The exception is a Pro plan bought through the Apple App Store: that one can't be upgraded in place, so cancel it in your Apple ID settings first and then start the Team upgrade.

Can I change my billing date instead of cancelling?

Not directly. Anthropic has no setting to move the renewal date of a web subscription. Its suggested workaround is to cancel, then subscribe again on the day you want the new monthly cycle to start.

Do I have to cancel before deleting my Claude account?

Yes. For Pro and Max, Anthropic asks you to cancel in your billing settings, wait for the paid period to run out, and only then delete the account. Deletion is permanent and takes away your conversations and projects, so export anything you want to keep from the web or desktop app beforehand.
