How to archive ChatGPT chats and find archived chats

Archiving clears a conversation out of your ChatGPT sidebar without throwing it away. This guide shows how to archive one chat or all of them, where archived chats end up, and how to bring one back.

Updated 18 October 2026

Quick answer: open the ••• menu next to a chat in your sidebar and select Archive. The chat leaves your sidebar but stays in your account and still shows up in Search. To see or restore it, go to Settings → Data controls → Archived chats and select Unarchive.

The steps below were checked against OpenAI's help pages on 18 October 2026. Button labels can differ slightly between the web, desktop and mobile apps.

Archive or delete: which one do you want?

Both options get a chat out of your sidebar, but they do very different things to the conversation itself.

Can you get it back?Yes, unarchive at any timeNo, not even through OpenAI Support
How long it's keptSame as a regular chat: until you delete it or a workspace policy removes itScheduled for permanent erasure within 30 days, with some legal and security exceptions
Confirmation stepNoneYes

Archive when you want a tidier sidebar but might need the conversation later. Delete only when you're sure you never will. If deleting is what you're after, our guide to deleting ChatGPT chats covers it in detail.

Archive a single chat

  1. Find the conversation in your chat history in the sidebar.
  2. Open the ••• (more options) menu next to it.
  3. Select Archive. There's no confirmation dialog; the chat simply disappears from the list.

If you archive something by mistake, nothing is lost. Follow the unarchive steps further down.

Archive all your chats at once

  1. Open Settings from your account menu. On a phone, open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
  2. Select Data controls.
  3. Select Archive all chats.
  4. Read the confirmation message, then continue.

This acts on every chat in the account or workspace you're currently signed in to, including chats inside projects. It's a handy way to start with an empty sidebar while keeping everything. Be careful not to pick Delete all chats, which sits on the same screen and can't be undone.

Where archived chats live

There are two ways to reach an archived conversation:

Search is quicker when you remember what the chat was about. The list is better when you want to review or clean up your archive as a whole. For more ways to dig up older conversations, see how to find old ChatGPT conversations.

Unarchive a chat

  1. Go to Settings → Data controls.
  2. Select Archived chats or View archived chats (and Manage, if you see it).
  3. Find the conversation and select Unarchive. It returns to your regular chat history.

The same list also has a Delete option for each chat, if you decide an archived conversation can go for good.

If it doesn't work

A sidebar that doesn't need archiving

If you archive mainly to keep the important chats visible, a different structure may suit you better. Workbranch is a separate AI workspace, with answers from Google Gemini, that puts chats in an inbox by day and in color-coded project folders, with pinning, flags and ⌘K search. You can try it free for 3 days.

Frequently asked questions

Can OpenAI still train on an archived chat?

Archiving has no effect on training. Whether a chat can be used to improve OpenAI's models depends only on your Improve the model for everyone setting (and, in a work workspace, your organization's policy).

Do archived chats get deleted automatically after a while?

Not on a personal account. An archived chat is kept just as long as a regular one: until you delete it yourself. In a work or school workspace, an admin's retention policy can remove it.

Can I archive a temporary chat?

A temporary chat never enters your history, so there's nothing to archive. If you save it, it turns into a regular chat, and from then on you can archive it like any other.
