How to cancel ChatGPT Plus

Where you cancel ChatGPT Plus depends on where you started paying for it, and deleting the app doesn't stop the charges. Here's how to cancel on the web, on an iPhone and on Android, what happens afterwards, and when you can get money back.

Updated 15 October 2026

Quick answer: cancel with whoever bills you. If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, go to Settings → Billing and select Cancel under Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in your Apple subscriptions; if you subscribed on Android, cancel in Google Play. Do it at least 24 hours before your renewal date. You keep Plus until the paid period ends, and cancelling alone doesn't refund anything.

These steps were checked against OpenAI's help pages in October 2026. Menu names may shift a little in later versions of ChatGPT.

First, find out who bills you

A ChatGPT Plus subscription is managed by the place you bought it: OpenAI for chatgpt.com, Apple for the App Store, or Google for Google Play. A subscription bought on chatgpt.com won't show up in your Apple or Google Play lists. If you're not sure, check your purchase receipt, or look in each place below until you find ChatGPT.

Cancel a subscription bought on chatgpt.com

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT in a web browser with the account that has Plus.
  2. Open your account menu and choose Settings.
  3. Go to Billing. Other OpenAI help pages describe this area as Account or Subscription, with a Manage button, so your screen may use one of those names.
  4. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
  5. Check the billing page again to make sure the plan is no longer set to renew.

Use a browser for this. OpenAI notes that you can't cancel a web subscription from inside the ChatGPT mobile app.

Cancel on an iPhone or iPad (App Store)

  1. Open the iPhone's Settings app (not ChatGPT's settings).
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions, then ChatGPT.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

If there's no cancel button and you see an expiry date instead, the subscription may already be cancelled.

Cancel on Android (Google Play)

Make sure you're signed in to the Google account you paid with. If your phone has several Google accounts, check each one.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Go to Subscriptions (OpenAI describes it as Menu → Subscriptions).
  3. Select ChatGPT.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

No Android phone to hand? Open your Google Play subscriptions page in a browser, sign in with the same Google account, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. If asked, give a reason and select Continue.

What happens after you cancel

Can you get a refund?

Cancelling never triggers a refund by itself, and OpenAI describes payments as generally non-refundable. The exceptions it lists:

Where you subscribedHow to ask for a refundProcessing time after approval
chatgpt.comChat widget on help.openai.com, signed in to the charged account5–7 business days
Google PlayThe same OpenAI Help Center chatUp to 10 business days
Apple App StoreAsk Apple directlyHandled by Apple

These times cover OpenAI's side of the processing; your bank or card issuer may take longer to show the money. If a refund is granted, the Plus access it covered normally ends early. OpenAI can't refund you separately while you have a chargeback open with your bank.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to cancel on every device I use ChatGPT on?

No. A subscription belongs to your ChatGPT account and works on every device where you sign in, so you cancel it once, with whoever bills you. You only need more than one cancellation if you actually bought more than one subscription.

Can I switch to yearly billing instead of cancelling?

Not for Plus. OpenAI says it currently doesn't offer annual billing or paying several months in advance; Plus is billed monthly at $20.

If I cancel during a promotion, can I get the promo price back later?

No. Once cancelled, a promo code can't be used again, and resubscribing doesn't bring back the promotional price, even if you return within the original promotion period.
