GuideHow to export or save your Gemini chats
Google's help pages don't describe an "export everything" button inside Gemini. Your full history comes out through Google Takeout, and single answers go to Docs or Gmail in a couple of clicks. Here's how to do both, and which to use when.
Quick answer: to download all your Gemini chats, go to takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick My Activity, open All activity data included, keep only Gemini Apps, then click Next step and Create export. To save one answer, click Share & export below it and choose Export to Docs or Draft in Gmail.
These steps were checked against Google's own help pages in October 2026. They apply to personal Google Accounts; work and school accounts may see fewer options.
Which method do you need?
| You want to… | Use | Where it ends up |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a copy of all your chats | Google Takeout | An archive file you download, or in Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box |
| Keep or edit one answer | Export to Docs | A new Google Doc in your Drive |
| Send an answer by email | Draft in Gmail | A new Gmail draft |
| Save a table | Export to Sheets (web only) | A new spreadsheet in your Drive |
| Save a Canvas doc or Deep Research report | Share & export in the Canvas panel | Google Docs, or Slides for presentations |
Download all your Gemini chats with Google Takeout
Takeout is Google's tool for downloading account data. Your Gemini chats, the media Gemini generated and the files you uploaded all live inside My Activity, so that's where you select them.
- Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the Google Account you use for Gemini.
- Under Select data to include, click Deselect all. Takeout ticks most products by default, so skipping this makes a much bigger archive.
- Scroll to My Activity and tick its box.
- Click All activity data included. In the pop-up, click Deselect all, tick Gemini Apps, then click OK.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Next step.
Choose how to receive the archive
- Pick a delivery method. Send download link via email is the simplest. You can also add the archive to Drive (it counts toward your storage), Dropbox, OneDrive or Box.
- Choose Export once for a one-off copy.
- Pick a file type. .zip opens on almost any computer; .tgz may need extra software on Windows. Leave the maximum size as it is unless you have a reason to split the archive.
- Click Create export. If you chose a third-party service, follow the prompts to link it.
Download and open it
- Wait for the email. Google says an export can take from a few hours to a few days, though most people get the link the same day.
- Download it within about a week. The archive expires after roughly 7 days, and each archive can be downloaded up to 5 times. You may be asked for your password again before the download starts.
- Open it on a computer. Google recommends a desktop over a phone. Unzip the archive and open
archive_browser.htmlin your browser; it explains the files inside and how to view them.
Save one answer to Google Docs or Gmail
- Open the chat on gemini.google.com and find the response you want.
- Below it, click Share & export.
- Choose Export to Docs to save it as a new doc in Drive, or Draft in Gmail to start an email with it. The Gmail option needs a Gmail account.
In the Gemini app on Android, iPhone or iPad, tap More below the response and choose Export to Docs or Draft in Gmail. You can also touch and hold the response to pick a destination.
Tables have their own Export to Sheets button at the bottom right on the web, unless they contain images. Python code can go to Google Colab from the same Share & export menu on the web, though not on Google Workspace accounts.
Export a Canvas doc or Deep Research report
- Open the chat that holds the Canvas doc or research report.
- At the top right of the Canvas panel, click Share & export.
- Choose Export to Docs for text, Export to Slides for a presentation (PDF is offered too), or Copy contents to paste it anywhere.
What about sharing a link?
Share → Share conversation creates a public snapshot of the chat that anyone with the link can read. It's handy for showing someone a conversation, but it isn't a backup: Google's sharing help says a link stays up only while the chat remains in your activity, so deleting the chat or auto-delete can take it down. Our guide to sharing AI chats safely walks through it.
Good to know
- Exporting doesn't delete anything. Your chats stay in Gemini after a Takeout download. To remove them, see our guide to deleting Gemini chat history.
- Very recent changes may be missing. Anything that changes between your request and the moment the archive is built might not be included.
- Exported copies follow new rules. Once a response is in Docs, Gmail or another service, that service's terms and policies apply to it.
- Work and school accounts vary. Export options in Gemini depend on your Workspace settings, and an administrator can stop you downloading data with Takeout.
If it doesn't work
- No Gemini Apps option in Takeout. Look inside My Activity → All activity data included, not in the main product list. The separate Gemini entry is for your Gems.
- The archive failed or never arrived. Check spam, then create another export. Google suggests exporting one product at a time if an archive keeps failing.
- The download link has expired. Archives last about 7 days and allow 5 downloads. Request a new one.
- Export to Docs or Draft in Gmail is missing. On a work or school account, your administrator's settings decide what's offered. Draft in Gmail only works if you have a Gmail account.
Working with saved answers
Takeout gives you a safe copy, but not an easy place to act on what Gemini told you. For new questions, Workbranch takes a different approach: its answers come from Google Gemini and can be worked through as a point-by-point checklist with progress, then flagged, given due dates and filed in color-coded folders. There's a 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions
Does Takeout include my Gems?
Only if you tick them. In Takeout, Gems are a separate product labelled Gemini, while your chats sit under My Activity → Gemini Apps. Select both if you want your Gems and your conversations in the same archive.
Can Takeout back up my Gemini chats automatically?
Yes. On the archive options page, choose a frequency instead of Export once. Google's Takeout help describes scheduled exports as a new archive every 2 months for one year, with the first made straight away. That option isn't available if your account is enrolled in Google's Advanced Protection Program.
Does Export to Docs save the whole conversation?
Google's help describes it as a per-response tool: the Share & export button sits under each answer and turns that answer into a new doc. To keep a whole conversation, use Takeout. Canvas docs and Deep Research reports have their own Export to Docs option in the Canvas panel.
