How to delete Claude chats and history

A long Claude sidebar fills up with test prompts, half-finished drafts and chats you'd rather not keep. Here's how to remove one conversation or a whole batch, and what actually happens to the data once you do.

Updated 18 October 2026

Quick answer: on claude.ai, hover over a chat, click the ⋮ button and choose Delete, then confirm. To remove several, open Chats and tasks, pick Select from any chat's ⋮ menu, tick the chats (or Select all) and click Delete. On personal plans a deleted chat leaves your history at once and Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days, but memories created from it stay until you remove them in Settings → Memory.

These steps follow Anthropic's help pages as checked on 18 October 2026. Button names and icons may move in later versions of Claude.

Delete a single chat on the web

  1. Find the conversation in the left sidebar, or click Chats and tasks to see the full list.
  2. Hover over it and click the ⋮ button that appears on the right.
  3. Choose Delete.
  4. Click Delete again in the confirmation box.

The same menu has Rename, which is often the better choice when a chat is worth keeping but has an unhelpful title.

Delete many chats at once

  1. Click Chats and tasks in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over any conversation, click ⋮ and choose Select.
  3. Tick the box next to each chat you want gone, or use Select all to mark every chat in the list.
  4. Click Delete, then confirm with Delete.

Before you use Select all, scan the list for anything you'd regret losing.

What deletion actually removes

ItemWhat happens when you delete a chat
The conversation (Free, Pro, Max)Gone from your history immediately, erased from Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days
Memories Claude built from itNot removed. Delete them yourself under Settings → Memory
Projects and account informationKept until you delete them or close the account
Team and Enterprise chatsRemoved from your visible history, but the organization's back-end retention still applies

Memory needs the most attention. On Free, Pro and Max it's switched on by default, and Anthropic says deleting a conversation doesn't erase the memory entries generated from it. Open Settings → Memory and use Topics to view, edit or delete individual memories. The same page has Reset memory if you'd rather start over, and Pause memory if you want Claude to stop adding to it for now.

Keeping the chats you do want

Many people delete because the useful conversations get buried. Workbranch is a separate AI workspace, with answers from Google Gemini, that files chats in an inbox by day and in color-coded project folders, with pinning, flags and ⌘K search. It has a 3-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a deleted Claude chat back?

Anthropic's help pages don't describe any way to restore a conversation after you confirm the deletion, so treat it as final. If you might need the content later, export your data or copy the important parts somewhere safe before you delete.

Does deleting a chat delete the files I uploaded to a project?

Deleting a chat removes that conversation. Anthropic says projects and other account data are kept until you delete them yourself or close your account, so a project's files stay where they are. To remove a whole project, open its "..." menu, choose Delete and confirm with Yes, delete. An archived project has to be unarchived first.

Are incognito chats deleted automatically?

They never appear in your history or memory, but Anthropic says they're still kept for 30 days by default, and an Enterprise organization's custom retention setting can make that longer. They also aren't used for model training.
