GuideClaude usage limit reached: what it means and what to do
Claude stops mid-task with a message that your limit is reached, and the reset is hours away. Here is what the session and weekly limits actually are, where to see how much you have left, and what you can do right now.
Quick answer: Claude's paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits that reset once a week. When you hit one, you can wait for the reset time shown in the message, upgrade your plan, or turn on usage credits to keep going at pay-as-you-go rates. Check where you stand in Settings → Usage.
These details were checked against Anthropic's help center as of October 2026. Limits and wording can change, so treat the reset time in your own account as the final word.
The two limits, in plain terms
Anthropic describes your usage limit as a budget for how much you can do with Claude in a set period. On paid plans it has two layers:
- Session limit. A shorter allowance that resets every five hours. A long, intense working stretch can use it up in one sitting.
- Weekly limits. A second cap that resets once a week. Your Usage page shows the exact day and time. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable models.
The allowance is shared. Chats on claude.ai, work in Claude Desktop and coding in Claude Code all draw from the same pool. Pro, Max and Team plans get different amounts, and paid plans get more than the free plan.
A usage limit is different from a length limit. The usage limit is about how much you do across all your chats over time. The length limit is about how long a single conversation can grow. If Claude says your chat is too long, see how to continue a long Claude chat in a new one.
What the messages mean
| You see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Approaching session limit or Approaching weekly limit | An early warning, sometimes with a percentage used. You can still send messages. |
| 5-hour limit reached - resets [time] | The session allowance is used up and you have no usage credits. New messages wait until that time. |
| You've reached your weekly limit. It resets [day] at [time]. | The weekly cap is used up. This can be days away. |
| Now using credits or continuing with usage credits | Usage credits are on, so Claude keeps working and bills you per use until your spend cap or balance runs out. |
How to check your usage and reset time
- On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings and choose Usage.
- Under Plan usage limits, look at Current session for the five-hour allowance and at the weekly bars below it.
- Note when the weekly limit resets. The same page also shows your usage credits and, if you have one, a free limit reset.
What uses your limit fastest
According to Anthropic, a message does not cost a fixed amount. These things make each one heavier:
- Long conversations. The longer and more complex a chat gets, the more each new message costs. When a chat nears its context limit and Claude starts summarizing earlier messages, that uses extra allowance too, which is why Anthropic suggests a new chat when you're close to your limit.
- Big files and attachments. Large documents pasted or uploaded into a chat add up quickly.
- Model, effort and thinking. More capable models, higher effort levels and extended thinking draw more.
- Tools. Research, web search, connectors, artifacts and multi-step jobs such as running code are token-heavy.
What you can do right now
- Use a limit reset if you have one. Some eligible plans occasionally get a free reset. Go to Settings → Usage, find Resets and click Reset for free, then confirm. The same button can appear on the limit message. It isn't available in the mobile apps or in Claude Code, so use a browser or Claude Desktop.
- Turn on usage credits. On Pro and Max, open Settings → Usage, click Enable under Usage credits, set a monthly cap with Adjust limit, then Add funds. If you subscribed in a mobile app, do this on the web.
- Upgrade. Moving from Pro to Max, or from Max 5x to 20x, applies the higher limits right away.
- Wait for the reset. For a session limit this is at most five hours. Use the time to write down where you stopped.
Make the next session last longer
- Start fresh chats for new tasks instead of stretching one conversation across a whole day.
- Put reference files in a project. Project documents are cached, so reusing them soon after counts less than pasting them again. The cache expires after a while without activity, so after a long break they count in full once more. See how to set up Claude Projects.
- Batch related questions into one message instead of sending them one at a time.
- Switch things off when you don't need them: extended thinking, high effort, unused connectors and web search.
If it doesn't work
- The limit hit sooner than you expected. Check whether Claude Code or another device was running at the same time; it all counts toward the same pool.
- Credits are on, but Claude stopped anyway. You have reached your monthly spend cap or the prepaid balance ran out. Raise the cap with Adjust limit or add funds in Settings → Usage, or turn on auto-reload.
- You see a capacity message instead. Due to unexpected capacity constraints… is about Anthropic's servers being busy, not your limit. Wait a few minutes and try again, and check status.claude.com for real outages.
Don't lose the session's work when the limit hits
The painful part of a limit is often not the wait but losing the thread: which tasks were left, what you had decided. If you use Workbranch for Claude, say save this to Workbranch when the Approaching session limit warning shows up. Claude files the chat's tasks, decisions, open questions and ideas into a Workbranch project by topic, and after the reset you can ask what's open on my project? to pick up where you left off. Saving runs on your Claude plan, so do it before the allowance is gone. Workbranch has a 3-day free trial at app.workbranch.ai.

Frequently asked questions
Does Claude Code use the same limit as claude.ai?
Yes. Anthropic counts everything you do in claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code against one shared allowance, so a long coding session in the terminal can leave less for chat, and the other way round.
If I upgrade from Pro to Max, do I have to wait for the reset?
No. Anthropic says the higher limits of a new plan apply as soon as you upgrade, so you can carry on straight away.
Do usage credits cost the same as my plan?
No. Credits are charged separately from the subscription at Anthropic's standard API rates, and they only cover usage beyond your plan once you have prepaid funds. You can set a monthly spend cap, or leave it unlimited.
