GuideHow to use ChatGPT study mode
Study mode makes ChatGPT act more like a tutor than an answer machine. Here's how to switch it on, what changes compared with a normal chat, and how to get the most from it.
Quick answer: in a regular ChatGPT chat on the web, type @study (or select + and search for "study") and pick Study, or open chatgpt.com/studymode. In the iPhone or Android app, tap + and choose Study. ChatGPT will then ask questions, explain in steps and check your understanding instead of just handing over the answer.

How to turn on study mode
Study mode only works in a regular conversation. You can switch it on in a brand-new chat or in one you already have open.
On the web (you need to be signed in):
- Open a new or existing regular chat.
- In the message box, type
@study, or select + and type "study" to filter the menu. - Choose Study from the suggestions. A Study token appears in the message box.
- Write your first message and send it.
Shortcut: going to chatgpt.com/studymode opens a chat with Study already selected.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Tap + next to the message box to see the tools.
- Tap Study. If it isn't listed, search for it in that menu.
On Android:
- Tap + to open the tools.
- Search for Study and select it.
Some accounts also show extra learning shortcuts such as Quizzes. If you don't have them, you can simply ask study mode to quiz you.
How to turn it off
- Find the Study token in the message box.
- On the desktop web, put the cursor right after it and press Backspace or Delete. Where the token shows a small ×, select that instead.
- If Study shows as selected in the + menu, selecting it again can switch it off.
How it differs from a normal chat
A normal chat tries to answer your question as directly as possible. Study mode is built to help you learn the material, so the conversation feels different:
- Questions before answers. It often asks what you already know, where you got stuck or what you'd try next, in a Socratic style, rather than solving the problem for you.
- Explanations in layers. It starts simple and adds detail when you're ready. You can ask it to slow down, use an analogy or go deeper.
- Checks on your understanding. It can ask open questions, give feedback on your answers and point out what to review next.
- Same model, same limits. It uses your current plan and model, and doesn't unlock models you don't already have. Files, images and other tools work only as far as they already do in your chat.
It isn't strict, though: it may sometimes give a direct answer. If you'd rather work it out, ask for hints or one question at a time.
Good uses for study mode
- Learning a new concept from scratch, or splitting a large topic into smaller parts.
- Working through homework or practice problems step by step.
- Preparing for a quiz or exam: ask it to quiz you one question at a time and wait for your answer.
- Reviewing your own notes, slides, readings or a syllabus. You can upload files, PDFs or a photo of a problem (see how to upload files to ChatGPT).
- Making practice questions or flashcard-style review.
- Understanding why an answer is right or wrong, not just which one it is.
Your first message matters most. Tell it your level (for example first-year college or beginner), the subject and exact topic, what you're trying to do, what you already understand, and any test date or format. A message like "I'm in high school chemistry, my test on moles is Friday, quiz me one question at a time and explain what I get wrong" gives it everything it needs.
If memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories or past chats to tailor study mode, such as your goals or preferred style. You can review this under Settings > Personalization, in the Memory section. Study mode still works with memory off, just less personalized.
Good to know
- Plans: available on all ChatGPT plans worldwide, on web, iOS and Android, with any model available to you.
- Where it doesn't work: Temporary Chats, GPTs and Projects don't offer the Study option.
- Limits: study mode uses your normal message and rate limits. It doesn't add messages.
- Accuracy: it can make mistakes, so double-check anything important, especially for exams or high-stakes topics.
- School rules: for graded work, follow your school's or instructor's AI policy. Study mode is a study aid, not a replacement for your teacher or course materials.
- Teen and Edu accounts: a parent can set Study hours in Settings > Parental controls so eligible new chats start in study mode at chosen times, and some Edu workspaces apply it automatically, in which case the Study selector is hidden.
If it doesn't work
- You can't find Study. Make sure you're in a regular chat, not a Temporary Chat, a GPT or a Project. Use the search in the + menu, or open chatgpt.com/studymode.
- It still doesn't appear. Update the app and fully close and reopen it, or sign out and back in. On the web, hard refresh, clear site data for chatgpt.com, or try a private window with extensions off. A VPN, ad blocker or managed network can also get in the way. If none of this helps, contact OpenAI Support with your device, app version and a screenshot.
- It's too fast or too basic. Say so: ask it to pause after each step and use a simpler example, or to give harder questions and the common traps.
- It misreads your file. Upload a clearer copy, paste the key text, name the page or question to use, or ask it to summarize what it sees first.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid plan for study mode?
No. OpenAI lists it on all ChatGPT plans, on the web and in the iOS and Android apps, and it works with whichever models your plan gives you.
Does study mode give me more messages?
No. Your usual plan, model and rate limits still apply, so a long study session counts against the same allowance as any other chat.
Why is study mode on when I didn't choose it?
On a teen account, a linked parent may have set Study hours, and some ChatGPT Edu workspaces require it for regular chats. Ask the parent or the workspace admin if you want it changed.
